I know that is not the actual strain name, but this isn’t about a strain! It’s about Alaska. For those who haven’t heard, on February 24, 2015, Alaska became the third state to officially legalize recreational cannabis for adults! Alaska has always been quite lenient with its marijuana laws, even having medical cannabis for quite some time before recreational was even considered. They have taken a giant leap forward, following in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington, where recreational cannabis has been observed in action and proven successful over the past couple of years.
Here’s the problem though: Alaska legalized recreational cannabis for adults age 21 and over, but it is still illegal to sell cannabis, and obviously the black market is well, illegal. So where are the newly freed Alaskans supposed to get fine, regulated bud? Well, they may have to wait a bit, because the recreational market in Alaska won’t be up and running until at least 2016. Also, smoking in public is still a misdemeanor, with a $100 fine, which the police force claims they will “strictly enforce”.
It may not be professional and neat like Colorado, but neither was Colorado when they legalized, and neither was Washington. Alaska has taken a big step for the legalization movement, and all will be watching to see how they progress, and if recreational cannabis can really work in the Last Frontier.
